OBIT: Robert Irvin Black, oldest son of Randolph and Mary E. Black, was born Feb 11, 1909, at Doddsville, IL, and passed away at the St. Francis hospital in Macomb Jan. 23, 1929, at the age of 19 years, 11 months, and 12 days. Besides his father and mother, he is survived by two brothers, Scott H. and Maurice E., at home, his grandmother, Mrs. John Black of Macomb, and a host of other relatives and friends by whom he will be greatly missed. He was a devoted son and brother, endearing himself to all whom he cam in contact by his sunny and thoughtful disposition. Robert was a member of the M.E. church of Doddsville, being converted at the age of 13 under the pastorate of Rev. Whitlock. He was always a faithful member of his church and a willing worker in his Sunday school class. Although never a rugged boy, he took an active part in athletics. He was a member of both this year's football team and of the senior class of the Industry High School. He was always a brilliant student, ranking among the highest of his class. He was very fond of music. Six weeks ago, he was stricken with the flu and two weeks ago he was removed to the hospital. In spite of all that loving hands and medical science could do, nothing relieved his suffering, which he bore with patience and fortitude, never complaining, but ever thinking of others than himself.

NOTE: from his cousin, Caroline Prather Broadhead: "He had kidney problem, many years. Hated to go to high school due to frequent trip to the restroom. Dad (Albert Prather), mother (Clara Junia Black Prather), John (Prather), and I drove across IL to attend funeral - cold and snowy, but the church was full of mourners. Robert had just heard 'The Old Rugged Cross' and wanted that sung at his funeral."
