2nd Lieutenant Quirk was a passenger aboard U.S. Army Air Corps B-17G Flying Fortress #42-40024. During a flight from McChord Air Field in Washington to Kingman, Arizona, the bomber experienced structural failures due to severe icing conditions, and crashed near McClellan Field in Sacramento before it could make an emergency landing. All thirteen Army personnel aboard perished.

Thomas Quirk enlisted in the Army in 1939. Stationed with the 15th Infantry Division for 2 years. He then transferred to the Army Air Corps.

Lt. Quirk flew missions in a flying fortress flying out of England to Germany. He was killed in an explosion of his B-17.

The Gimbel-Lehey-Quirk VFW Post 2226, Oakhurst, NJ bears his name.
