David R. Grubaugh was born in 1840 to John Grubaugh and Elisabeth Riblet. He was a twin to John Henry Grubaugh. The twins were the 3rd and 4th children of 10 born to his parents. David served during the Civil War, joining Co H, Ohio 23rd Infantry Reg on 30 May 1861. He was promoted to full corporal in 1864 and was discharged on 15 May 1865. David married Isabell Gaverick on 15 May 1866 in Morrow County, OH. Isabell was a little older than David and had been married once before - to Jacob S. Neff. He died during the Civil War and his two children - Lydia Ann Neff and Hercules H. Neff - became David's stepchildren. David and Isabell and the two stepchildren went west with David's family and, as the family group paused for a few years in Indiana before continuing on to Nebraska, David and Isabell decided to settle in Indiana. David and Isabell had 3 daughters together, all born in Indiana - Eliza Jane Grubaugh Eddingfield (1867-<1920), Mary Nevada Grubaugh Hoopengarner (1869-1916), and Barbara Florence Grubaugh Lakey (1874-1918). Isabell died in 1903 and David married Mary Ann Williams Drabenstot on 12 Sep 1907 in Huntington County, IN. David died in 1915 and Mary Ann died in 1916.
