In 1860, John is found in Knox County, OH working for the Grant family and on 8 Aug 1861 he married Margaret (Marjory) Shafer in Holmes County, OH.
John and Margaret had one child, Andrew Jackson Grubaugh, born 22 Nov 1861.
On 22 Aug 1862, John joined Co. H, 120th Ohio Infantry and he fought for the Union forces during the Civil War. The 120th was involved in the some of the early assaults on Vicksburg in January 1863. The group removed to Smith's Plantation in preparation for the siege of Vicksburg in May 1863.
John died at Smith's Landing, Louisiana on 20 Apr 1863. It is not yet known what happened to his remains. He likely was buried in Louisiana in a Union Soldier cemetery.

US Registers of Deaths of Volunteers, 1861-1865: Mistakenly lists John as John H. SCRUBAUGH, Pvt, Co A 120th OH, died 19 Apr 1863 at regimental hospital of acute dysentery. Byron Stanton, regimental surgeon.
John had a younger brother, Isaac M. Grubaugh, who also was killed in the Civil War. Isaac served in Co. K, 102nd Ohio Infantry and was killed about one month after John Henry during a battle in Clarksville, TN.
Marjory went on to marry several times - first to John Lewis (in Indiana) and then to Martin Van Buren Garrison (in Ohio). She died in 1892
