He was born Feb. 17, 1922, in Green Valley, Ill., to Ernest and Maime (Adkins) Classen. He married Christine Crisp on Sept. 17, 1945, in Elizabeth City, N.C. She passed away June 11, 2012, in Peoria. He also was preceded in death by two brothers and one daughter, Delores Classen.
He is survived by one son, Keith (Carolyn) Classen and two grandchildren, Kristopher Classen and Hillary Classen (Kevin Whiteside).
Jim was a World War II Marine veteran and worked at Caterpillar Inc. as a cook, retiring in 1979. Jim loved cooking, country music and telling stories.
Graveside services will be Monday, Sept. 17, 2012, at 12 noon at Parkview Cemetery in Peoria, with military honors accorded.
Schmidt-Haller Burial and Cremation Services in Peoria is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials may be made to Alzheimer's Association or to the American Cancer Society.
