Mary Jane "Jannie" Zerfoss was the daughter of Abraham Zerfoss (1809-1855) and Elizabeth Harrison Brightman (1800-1870). Most of her first 10 years were spent in New York state, but after that the family moved to Coffin's Grove Township, Delaware County, Iowa, and it was there that Jannie met Wilbur Sherman Gardner, whom she married on July 4, 1861.
Jannie and Wilbur spent most of their lives in Delaware County, and it was there that they raised their family.
