Mexican War: Company K and B, Col. De Russy's Louisiana Infantry
Civil War: Company A (New), 1st California Cavalry

Ebenezer Carlton Ledyard was born in New London, Connecticut, about 1827, the son of Ebenezer Carlton Ledyard and Maria Jons. During the Mexican War he enlisted as a private at New Orleans, Louisiana, December 26, 1846, and was mustered into Company K, Colonel De Russy's Louisiana Infantry. He was later elected to serve as a 2nd Lieutenant with Company B, same regiment, December 24, 1847. Lieutenant Ledyard was mustered out at New Orleans July 6, 1848, and soon struck out for California. He married (1) Maria Priquet (1829, France-Apr. 13, 1866, SF) in Yuba County October 25, 1852 (Western States Marriage Record Index, Vol. I, No. 7). During the Civil War he was commissioned a captain at the Presidio of San Francisco March 2, 1865, and mustered in as the commander of Company A (New), 1st California Cavalry, March 9, 1865. He was posted to Tucson, Arizona Territory, in April where his company served as the escort for Colonel John S. Mason, and later at Fort Whipple. He returned to California with his company about March 1866 and was mustered out at the Presidio of San Francisco May 22. Only a month earlier, on April 13, his wife died; and less than a month later, his son Ebenezer, jr., died on June 9. They were buried in San Francisco's old Calvary Cemetery (defunct). After his daughter Mary's death at San Francisco in December 1868, Ebenezer went to Mexico where he married (2) Juana Amaya at Mazatlán, Sinaloa, on June 30, 1870, and they settled at Ures, Sonora. They had three children. Suffering from tuberculosis, he moved to Tucson, Arizona, for treatment and while there committed suicide. He was buried in this cemetery and there is no record of his reinterment to Evergreen Cemetery when Court Street Cemetery was closed in 1909. Several years after his death, Juana filed for a Civil War widow's pension in Sonora, Mexico, November 14, 1892, and received application No. 564,299.
