Sometimes called just "Franklin", he was the third son of Vincent and Jane (Ausman) Story. His parents, along with his Story grandparents James and Hannah Mary (Self) Story and six of his father's siblings moved from Tennessee to Morgan County, Illinois before 1830. Within a few years, Franklin's mother Jane and his grandfather James Story had both died, and Vincent and his children were living with his widowed grandmother, Hannah, at the time of the 1840 Census. After Jane died, Vincent would marry four more times and have three more children in his lifetime.

Franklin married Nancy Duncan McManus, who apparently had moved to Illinois from the same area in Tennessee and likely in the same group of pioneers, on 6 January 1847 in Macoupin County, Illinois. They had ten children: Jane Catherine, Sarah, Mary E., Martha E., Joeabb, William P., Louviena Isabelle, Nancy J., Rosetta, and Ida.

Apparently there is no stone for him in this cemetery, but his wife and unmarried daughter are buried here and he probably is, too.
