My great grandfather Elmer married (1) Marguerite Mary Schilling on 30 January 1913 in Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota and they had a son, Kenneth Ernest. The marriage was likely annulled, as Mardie's parents didn't allow her to see Elmer when they discovered she was pregnant, and they sent her away to give birth privately. They raised Kenneth as their son who grew up believing Mardie was his sister.

Elmer married (2) Anna Alice Dahl on 7 July 1915 in Teien, Kittson County, Minnesota and they had two children, Alice Dorothy and Louis Harold. He passed away at age 27 of meningitis and influenza.

Obituary in the Kennedy Star, 4 Feb 1921: "FORMER KENNEDY BOY BURIED AT DRAYTON. Elmer Ernest Thompson, age 27 years and 8 months, died at his home in Drayton on Friday, January 21st at 11am after a brief but serious illness. The deceased was taken sick just a week ago, and in spite of the best medical skill and attention all efforts for his recovery were in vain. Elmer Thompson was born in Red River Township, Minnesota, on May 16, 1893, and was married to Miss Anna Dahl in Teien, Minnesota on July 7, 1915. Of this union were born two children, Alice, age 4 years and Louis, age 3 years. For the past six years Mr. Thompson was engaged in business in Drayton, and was a member of the village council. He had recently completed the building of a most comfortable home for his family. Standing on the threshold of his young manhood his future seemed full of promise. He was an affectionate and devoted husband and son, and he will be sadly missed by his relatives and friends who loved him so well. The funeral arrangements were in charge of the Yeomanry Lodge of Odd fellows of which Mr. Thompson was a member. Most impressive services were conducted at the home at 1pm on Sunday, January 23rd, and from the Swedish Mission Church at Teien at 2:30pm. Reverend F. A. Lindholm, the pastor, assisted by Reverend Walter E. Vater of the Methodist Church officiated. Appropriate hymns were sung with much feeling and both pastors brought messages of comfort to the bereaved. The casket which was carried by six young men, friends of the deceased, was covered with beautiful floral tributes, the gift of loving hearts. Such an array of beautiful flowers, reminding us once again of the springtime of the soul. The church was filled to its capacity with people and the various lodges of which the deceased was a member were well represented. Interment was made in the church cemetery. The deepest sympathy is extended to the sorrowing relatives. Those who remain to mourn his loss are his sorrowing wife and children, his father and mother, two brothers and five sisters."
