Mardie grew up in Cottonwood, Minnesota, surrounded by lots of family. She met and secretly married a boy named Elmer Thompson in 1913. Her father and stepmother weren't happy about the marriage or that Mardie was expecting a child, so they sent her to a Women's Christian Home in St Paul to give birth to her son, Kenneth. It seems that Mardie and Elmer's marriage was annulled but I haven't been able to find any documentation for this. Elmer did later marry a woman named Anna in 1915 and had two children, Alice and Louis. Mardie also later married a man named Roy Kean in 1925 and they had two children, Alice and Tom.
My grandpa Kenneth was adopted by his grandparents as a baby, and he grew up believing Mardie was his sister. It wasn't until Grandpa was in college that he discovered Mardie and a man named Elmer Thompson were his birth parents. This happened when Elmer's father Thomander Thompson passed away and provided for my grandpa in his will.
