Dale was born to Guy and Mertie Roberts on a farm near Lewellen, Nebraska. He was one of 11 children; six boys and 5 girls -- only 3 of his sisters survive Dale.

He and his wife Patty lived in Omaha, NE. They had three children: Pam, who with husband Scott, own and operate a small winery in northern California; John, who with wife DeeAnn live in Lincoln, NE; and Todd, who with wife Marcia live near Lincoln, NE.

Dale had a small masonery firm for many years. He was a crafstman/artist in his expert brickwork and concrete work. He was sought out for special works of those kinds.
