Barbara Helen Butler, age 72, of Peoria, Arizona, a former Garden County resident, passed away, after battling cancer, on Saturday, April 24, 2004 at her home in Peoria.

She was born October 14, 1931 in Lewellen, Nebraska, the daughter of Guy and Mertie (Mardis) Roberts. Barbara grew up in Garden County, and graduated from the Garden County High School in Lewellen.

Following her graduation, she moved to Lincoln were she met her future husband in 1949. She married Merlin "Mel" Butler in Marysville, Kansas on June 21, 1950. The couple traveled extensively with the Union Pacific Railroad system on various job assignments. Barbara's sole purpose in life was to be a good wife and mother, which she did to perfection.

Survivors include her husband, Merlin "Mel" Butler of Peoria, Arizona; one son, Michael and wife, Marcia Butler of Ogallala and their son, Scott Butler of Ogallala; four brothers, Bud Roberts of Fairbrook, California, Charles Roberts of Vista, California, Dale Roberts of Irvinton, Myron Roberts of Greeley, Colorado; three sisters, Carol McCormick of Worland, Wyoming, Marilyn Roberts of Ft. Collins, Colorado; Patty Roberts of Lincoln.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Cynthia Louise; two sons, Robert Dean and Randall Lee at age thirteen of leukemia; one sister, Pauline Seavers; two brothers, Ray and Richard Roberts.

Following cremation, memorial services and inurnment will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, May 14th at the Ash Hollow Cemetery, near Lewellen. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or to a fund for the benefit of the Ash Hollow Cemetery care of the Gubser Funeral Home, 602 No. Spruce St., Ogallala, NE 69153.
