Herman was the third child and second son born to John Bernhardt Lebrecht and Mariea Elizabeth (Batree) Steiding. He was born in Barton, Allegany County, Maryland. Herman married Susan "Sue" E. Beckman on 10 September 1890 in Garrett County, Maryland, the daughter of Theodore W. "Dora" Beckman. On the 1910 and 1930 census, Herman was living in Swanton, Garrett County, Maryland They resided on the big family property in Swanton, Garrett County, Maryland, where they grew up. They had the following children: Annie Louise (Steiding) Glotfety; Bessie Beulah Steiding Shank; Dorothy Virginia (Steiding) Schmidt; Keith James Steiding, Marie Elizabeth (Steiding) Schmidt and Herman Herbert Steiding.

SWANTON — Herman H. Steiding Sr., 91, of Swanton, died Monday at his home.

He was born in Swanton, Nov. 13, 1911, and was a son of the late, Herman Steiding and Sue (Beckman) Steiding.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Freeda (Howell) Steiding; and one daughter.

Mr. Steiding was a retired dairy farmer.

He is survived by one son, Herbert H. Steiding Jr., Aurora, W.Va.; two daughters, Bonnie J. Sunny, Swanton, and Martha S. Slaughter, also of Aurora; 11 grandchildren; numerous great and great-great-grandchildren.

Friends may call the Durst Funeral Home, Oakland, Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be conducted at the funeral home, Thursday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Father Donald Parson officiating.

Interment will be in Garrett County Memorial Gardens.

The family request that in lieu of flowers members take the form of contribution, to Hospice of Garrett County or the Southern Garrett County Rescue Squad
