The three eldest daughters, Lydia, Maude, and Elsie already had some teacher training at Buena Vista College, Storm Lake, IA and some teaching experience before coming to SD, so they resumed teaching almost immediately (after filing on individual homesteads) in Meade County rural schools and surrounding areas. They never married, so they continued teaching for the remainder of most of their lives.
