The son of John Mathias & Christina (Reaver) Loy, he married Martha J. Reifsnyder ca. 1849 and fathered Harry C. (b. 09/08/55), John M. (b. @1859), Anthony Byers (b. 12/12/71), Jacob (b. @1863), George (b. @1865), Edward W. (b. 02/01/69), Frank (b. 11/18/72), and Hezekiah (b. @1879). In 1860, he was a plasterer living in Newton Township, Cumberland County, and stood 5' 8" tall with dark hair and blue eyes..

A Civil War veteran, he served two terms of service:
1. Drafted at the stated age of thirty-seven in Carlisle October 16, 1862, mustered into federal service at Camp McClure, Chambersburg, November 1 as "Jacob Long" 9or so it appears in the company register) as a private with Co. F, 158th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), and honorably discharged with his company August 12, 1863.
2. Enlisted at the stated age of thirty-nine in Harrisburg August 25, 1864, mustered into federal service there August 27 as a sergeant with Co. H, 202nd Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company August 3, 1865.

A post-war member of Newville's Sharp Post No. 371, G.A.R., he died from "organic heart disease."
