Mary Annie Bales was born Oct. 3, 1859, a daughter of John W. and Adella (Gardner) Bales. Her mother died shortly before Mary's second birthday in 1861. Her father left Mary and her older brother Nathan with his parents, then left for Indiana, possibly trying to avoid conscription into the Confederate army. Mary was reared by her grandparents, Caleb and Anna (Cook) Bales. They were Quakers so Mary was undoubtedly raised in that faith, but by the time she might have requested membership for herself, she had fallen in love with a Methodist. She married 1 June 1884 to Joseph Daniel Garrett, a grocer in Jamestown. They were the parents of six children: 5 sons and a daughter.
