Born Nicolaus Joseph Salz in: Nova Lipa is a village to the northwest of Vinica in the Municipality of Èrnomelj, Republic of Slovenia in 1862. When he was 11 years old he traveled to America with his aunt and uncle John and Anna Rogena and lived near Browns, Iowa. That is where he met and married his wife Mary Franzen. After their marriage they moved to Kingerly, Iowa where they lived for five years and then moved to Wathena where his parents settled when they arrived in America. They lived there until 1905 when they moved to Colby. Since that time the family home was at the farm northwest of Colby.
