He enlisted with Company E of the 35th Battalion of Virginia Cavalry on 24 February 1863 in Shenandoah County. He brought his own horse. He was paroled at Winchester on 8 May 1865. That document states he stood five feet seven inches tall with dark hair and hazel eyes. After the war he was a member of the Rosser-Gibbons Camp of United Confederate Veterans.

John was married 23 Nov 1869 in Page County, VA to Eliza Jane Koontz. They had a daughter Ella in 1870. He was married 20 Apr 1880 in Hancock County, IL to Laura Anne Brumback. They had at least four children: Arthur, Jessie, Harold, and Julia.
