"Bob" as he was known, died at Winona Memorial Hospital about 4 a.m. By the time that we were called the lady that he lived with and rented a room off of had already taken all of his social security check, and he was not given his heart medicine. He died of complications of heart disease. No charges were filed as nothing could be proven, although the doctors said that he must have laid there for hours before an ambulance was even called. He was cremated, there was no showing, and no funeral. His ashes were interred here.

Although Phillip Robert Mobley was my grandfather, I neither saw him often or wanted to. He had been very abusive to my mother when she was a child, eventually abandoning her. My uncle, Robert Edwin "Buddy" Mobley, witnessed one of the beatings and attacked him, at that point, he took Mom to their maternal aunts and he ran away and joined the Navy (even though he had to lie about his age). When I was a teenager Phillip would come over to visit my mother, and was intoxicated each and every time until just before his death. He was involved in several accidents over the years, and one accident he apparently hit and killed a child, and then got out of his vehicle and walked away. The mother of the victim found my mother's name and phone number in his wallet which he left in the car. The poor lady called us for months and months (because she was grieving and did not understand why my grandfather would do such a thing) until my father decided to have our number changed.

Phillip and a neighbor were arrested but he was later released for the shooting death, of Stanley Hawkins, my mother's step-brother. Apparently they were drinking and playing cards, and after all were intoxicated Phillip accused Stanley of cheating. He asked the other man, to go in the house and get his gun, when the man returned, he told him to shoot Stanley and he did. Stanley died and both men were originally charged with murder but somehow my grandfather got out of it, I don't know what happened to the other man.
