She was born on Nov. 26, 1926, in Bethel, Conn., and was a daughter of the late S. M. V. Sandstrom and Ruth Molhman-Sanstrum.
Dorothy, Dot to most, surrounded herself with adopted children and gardens of iris at the home she and her husband of 54 years built overlooking the beautiful valley and the Blue Ridge Mountains they fell in love with in 1964.
On May 15, 1949, she married Robert E. Anderson, who survives.
Surviving in addition to her husband are two sons, Paul Anderson of Rockville, Md., and David Anderson of Stanley; three daughters, Marjorie Hilliard of Stanley, Vicki Fox of Luray, and Shelly Wyatt of Hedgesville, W. Va.; a brother, Roy Sandstrom of Potomac, Md.; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, Donald Sandstrom.
