Bud joined the US Navy on 5/19/58, a week before graduating from American Fork High School. He asked Principal Charlie Walker if he could join the Navy prior to his birthday on 5/23/40, so he could get in on the kiddie cruise (3 yr enlistment). Charlie said he would get his diploma, so Bud joined and off he went to San Diego, CA for bootcamp. Bootcamp is rough on a young boy who had never been away from home, away from mom. Much loneliness and marching out in the hot California sun. His nose would sunburn and peel almost every day. After bootcamp, Bud stayed in San Diego for 3 more months for (ICE) Interior Communications Electrician School. Then he attended (MPO) Motion Picture Operators School, also in San Diego. He then went home to American Fork for Christmas 1959. His first tour of duty was in the Norfolk Group Atlantic Reserve Fleet, Portsmouth, VA. He was there for 1960. NGARF was the mothball fleet of ships the Navy had retired but preserved in case of another war. Bud was next transferred to Charleston, SC to serve aboard the USS Salute MSO-470. Then aboard USS Nimble (MSO-459) an ocean going minesweeper. The smallest ships in the Fleet. The Nimble left for a Carribian cruise in Nov 1960, 3 days after his marriage to Ada Paulette Johnston. While traveling south along the east coast, their sister ship , the USS Exultant, caught on fire and 5 sailors were killed. We towed our sister ship into Jacksonville, FL. President Kennedy sent 100 ships to Cuba to show the Russians that we were not going to tolerate missles on Cuba aimed at America. We went to San Juan, Roosevelt Roads, Viegas Island and Guantanimo Bay, Cuba. While in Gitmo he got to see the Bob Hope Christmas special for service men. Bud served 2 yrs 9 mo 26 days.
