Enlisted in Tarrytown, New York, as a private in Company K of the 133rd New York to serve for 3 years. He was transferred to the 90th New York to finish out his service on 31 May 1865. He mustered out in Savannah with his Company A.

Apparently civilian life did not suit him as he enlisted in the 7th U.S. Cavalry on 3 January 1872.

He was at the Battle of the Little Big Horn he was in Company K, under Edward Settle Godfrey. He saw action on Reno Hill.
