Henry Samuel Atkins, Sr. passed away on Wednesday September 17, 2008 at the Georgia War Veterans Nursing Home. POP Sam as he was known by his grandchildren and great- grandchildren was born on December 2, 1918 in Richmond County. He was married to the late Virginia Adams Atkins for over 60 years. He was a devoted husband to Virginia. He was the son of Henry S. Atkins and Ernest Napier Atkins.
Graveside funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Saturday September 20, 2008 at Westover Memorial Park with Rev. Pat Williams officiating. Honorary pallbearers will be the staff of Georgia War Veterans Nursing Home.
Survivors include three children and their spouses Henry Samuel (Marsha )Atkins, Jr., Thomson, GA. , Charles Rydner (Joan) Atkins , St. Simons Island, GA. and Beth (Birnie) Florie, Evans GA.; ten grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
POP Sam was a veteran of World War II and worked in law enforcement for over 35 years. He retired from the City of Augusta Police Department as a Lieutenant in 1968, and later worked as a Major on the Richmond County Sheriff's Department retiring in 1977.
POP Sam and Virginia purchased the first lot that was sold in Country Club Hills. The built their home in 1949. POP Sam lived there until 2004 when he moved to the Georgia War Veterans Nursing Home.
When he was young, POP Sam was a daredevil on a motorcycle and was a motorcycle policeman until 1956.
The Family will receive friends from 6 until 8 pm ON Friday evening at Elliott Sons Funeral Home, 1134 Telfair Street, Augusta. For those wishing to make memorial contributions in lieu of flowers please consider the Georgia War Veterans Nursing Home.
