D.O. McComb Funeral Set for Monday
Funeral Services for DAVID O. McCOMB, aged 64, superintendent of Allen County Public Schools during the last 24 years and widely-known Fort Wayne resident, will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at the Crescent Avenue Evangelical Church. The Rev. LeRoy Geiger, pastor of the church will officiate.
The body will lie in state at the church from 11 a.m. Monday until the time of the funeral. The body may be viewed by friends at D. O. McComb & Sons Funeral Home after 10 a.m. Saturday. Pallbearers had not been selected and the place of burial not determined early this afternoon.
Mr. McComb died of heart failure Thursday afternoon at 3 o'clock at his home, 1140 Lake Avenue. He had been ill since January, 1936, when he underwent an operation, and became critically ill three days before his death. He had been confined to his home for several months.
Surviving are the widow. Mrs. Anna C. McComb, two sons: JAMES C. McCOMB, of Fort Wayne and WALTER A. McCOMB, of Fort Wayne and two daughters: MISS ANN MAE McCOMB, of Fort Wayne and MISS DORIS McCOMB, of Fort Wayne; two brothers: MORTON T. McCOMB, of Huntertown and THOMAS C. McCOMB, of Fenwick, Michigan.
The deceased established the mortuary business which bears his name early in 1925 and turned over active management of the business to his sons in 1932. Mr. McComb was widely known as an educator and was termed "the father of Allen County's public school system."
Mr. McComb became a teacher in 1894, having taught first at Sheldon. He later taught in the Bowser, Stirling, Hirsch and Dutch Ridge schools, all in Perry Township, Allen County.
Headed State Superintendents
Mr. McComb was a former president of the Indiana County Superintendents' Association and was active in that organization for many years. He was on the executive committee several years and served on the legislative committee and in other capacities. He was considered one of leaders in county school educational work in the state.
Mr. McComb was elected Allen County Superintendent in March 1913 and had held that office continuously since that time. It was largely under his direction that rural schools of the county were consolidated.
Prior to becoming County School Superintendent, Mr. McComb served from 1911 until 1913 as deputy county auditor by appointment of CALVIN H. BROWN. He was credited with having obtained the first Agricultural Agent for Allen County and also with having inaugurated the Allen County Library system with branches established throughout the county.
Mr. McComb was one of the first organizers of and was the first president of the Northeastern Indiana Teachers' Association, formed in 1922. He served as chairman of the association's executive board from the time of the association's founding until replaced because of his illness on November 13 of last year, by Merle J. Abbett, Superintendent of Fort Wayne Public Schools.
Former Sunday School Head
He was a member of the Crescent Avenue Evangelical Church and served several years as Sunday School Superintendent at the church. Mr. McComb was a charter member of Maumee Lodge No. 725, Free & Accepted Masons. He served as president of the Fort Wayne Council of National Unions, a fraternal insurance society, and on the board of the State Teachers' Reading Circle.
Mr. McComb was born June 11, 1872, in Perry Township, Allen County, a son of JAMES McCOMB and Mrs. MARGARET SIMONTON McCOMB. His father, a native of Ireland, became a resident of Allen County in 1850. The deceased, a lifelong resident of Allen County, attended school at Huntertown and later studied at Taylor University, Upland, and Tri-State College, Angola. He became a teacher in 1894.
Active As Local War Worker
He was married December 25, 1900, to Miss ANNA C. MATSCH, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. C. MATSCH. Mr. McComb served as a team worker in the initial building campaign of the Y.M.C.A.; as chairman of the rural Red Cross membership campaign for two years; captained a team in the Red Cross war fund drive in 1917, and was captain and township director in the Red Cross Christmas Roll Call of 1918.
He was a township organizer in all Liberty Loan drives during the World War, and was Allen County director of the Boy's Working Reserve which enrolled 2,459 boys, the largest enrollment in Indiana. After close of World War, Mr. McComb served on the special committee on service to returning soldiers, and on the Allen County rehabilitation committee which provided vocational training for disabled veterans. He also was active in many Christmas Seal campaigns.
The Allen County school superintendent's office in the Court House probably will be closed all day Monday in tribute to Mr. McComb.

Trustees of Allen county schools will serve as pallbearers during funeral services for DAVID O. Bearers will include GEORGE MARTIN of Perry township, THEODORE GOEGLEIN of St. Joe township, THOMAS KENDALL of Aboite township, JOSEPH GIANT of Jefferson township, DAVID LIECHTY of Washington township and ORA MOORE of Jackson township.
Honorary pallbearers include FRED WISSMAN, HARRY BENDER, GLEN SLOFFER, ALVA WOODS, OTTO GREENER, HERMAN FRANKE, CLARA M. GRIEBEL, CARL REKEWEG, JOHN S. DUFF, RALPH PALMER, OLIVER REPP and ELMER FOX. The honorary bearers will serve as a guard of honor at the bier as it lies in state at Crescent Avenue Evangelical churh Monday from 11 a.m. until time of the services at 2 o'clock. Rev. LeRoy Geiger will officiate during the rites. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park.

"Resolved, that the membership of the Allen county board of education adopts these resolutions in tribute to the memory of our late superintendent of schools, and dear friend, DAVID O. McCOMB.
"Although his frail physique was racked with pain and suffering for more than a year, still D. O. McComb's thoughts were of his work. A life devoted in the education of children for more than 40 years could not in a few months, tortured as they were by bodily ills, easily relinquish its great work.
"The public schools of Allen county as we see them today are his own product. Under his wise guidance and thoughtful co-operation with the trustees they have flowered to fruitation and stand without a superior among the rural schools of the middle west.
"During the World War Supt. McComb quickly mobilized the schools for patriotic service and organized the largest Boy's Working Reserve in Indiana.
"Consolidation of rural schools in Allen county resulted from his unending battle against great odds. He championed and secured the appointment of Allen county's first agricultural agent. He successfully led the movement for a county library. He introduced domestic science and agriculture into the rural schools. He conceived the idea of the Northern Indiana Teachers' association and fathered its organization. Once the organization was perfected, he held it together by his tact and generalship. D. O. McCOMB influenced school policies in the state of Indiana not only through the example set in Allen county but through his counsel in legislative matters and his advice as a member of the State Teachers' Reading circle.

Bearers will include GEORGE MARTIN of Perry township, THEODORE GOEGLEIN of St. Joe township, THOMAS KENDALL of Aboite township, JOSEPH GIANT of Jefferson township, DAVID LIECHTY of Washington township and ORA MOORE of Jackson township.
Honorary pallbearers include FRED WISSMAN, HARRY BENDER, GLEN SLOFFER, ALVA WOODS, OTTO GREENER, HERMAN FRANKE, CLARA M. GRIEBEL, CARL REKEWEG, JOHN S. DUFF, RALPH PALMER, OLIVER REPP and ELMER FOX. The honorary bearers will serve as a guard of honor at the bier as it lies in state at Crescent Avenue Evangelical churh Monday from 11 a.m. until time of the services at 2 o'clock. Rev. LeRoy Geiger will officiate during the rites. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park.
All schools in the county will close at noon Monday in honor of the memory of Mr. McComb.
Resolutions adopted by the county board of education at yesterday's meeting follow:
"Resolved, that the membership of the Allen county board of education adopts these resolutions in tribute to the memory of our late superintendent of schools, and dear friend, DAVID O. McCOMB.
"Although his frail physique was racked with pain and suffering for more than a year, still D. O. McComb's thoughts were of his work. A life devoted in the education of children for more than 40 years could not in a few months, tortured as they were by bodily ills, easily relinquish its great work.
"The public schools of Allen county as we see them today are his own product. Under his wise guidance and thoughtful co-operation with the trustees they have flowered to fruitation and stand without a superior among the rural schools of the middle west.
"During the World War Supt. McComb quickly mobilized the schools for patriotic service and organized the largest Boy's Working Reserve in Indiana.
"Consolidation of rural schools in Allen county resulted from his unending battle against great odds. He championed and secured the appointment of Allen county's first agricultural agent. He successfully led the movement for a county library. He introduced domestic science and agriculture into the rural schools. He conceived the idea of the Northern Indiana Teachers' association and fathered its organization. Once the organization was perfected, he held it together by his tact and generalship. D. O. McCOMB influenced school policies in the state of Indiana not only through the example set in Allen county but through his counsel in legislative matters and his advice as a member of the State Teachers' Reading circle.
"Resolved, that this resolution be spread upon our minutes and a copy of it sent to the family of the deceased.
