Charles' first wife died only 11 years after their marriage by drinking from a cup that had been used to mix poison for an animal. Their arrival in the Valley is not known.

Charles homesteaded a farm in Wallsburg and built one of the first homes there. It still stands. He made several trips across the plains to help the saints to the valley. He was a great hunter.

Charles died as the result of an infection from a tooth problem.
