Marcelina G. Almaraz
Services: Wed. May 7, 10:30 AM

Marcelina Gonzales Almaraz was born in Rhome, Texas on September 1, 1918 to Elijio and Gonzala Gonzales. She was one of ten children. At the age of 19, together with her family, she came to the Shafter area for what was to be a shirt visit. Instead, this area became her permanent home.

Marcelina married her sweetheart, Victor Almaraz, on October 13, 1940 and shortly after their marriage, they moved to Bakersfield. Marcy and Victor were married 62 years and they had thirteen children.

On March 24, 2003 Victor passed away leaving his yellow rose from Texas brokenhearted. After short illness Mom went to Dad on May 1, 2003.

Like many women of her era, Mom was a stay-at-home wife and mother. Her life was her family and she enjoyed visiting and talking with her relatives, especially her sisters Jovita and Estefana. Her most treasured topic of conversation was her home stats of Texas.

Sundays will never be the same without Grandmas chile verde and salsa. Marcelina was preceded in death by her husband, Victor, her parents, eight brothers and sisters, as well as her own children, Irene Fuentez, Arturo, Patricio, and Antonio Almaraz.

Marcelina is survived by her daughters and their spouses Josephine and Henry Garza, Ruth and Louis Aguirre, Mary and Jesse Torres, Irma Almaraz and Lucia Almaraz; sons and their spouses Vito and Becky, Lupe and Mary, Victor Jr., and Lorenza. She is also survived by 36 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren, her brother Andy Gonzalez and numerous other relatives.

Visitations will be at Bakersfield Family Funeral Directors Chapel of the flowers, 701 34th St., on May 6, 2003 from 2 p.m. until 6 pm with recitation of the Holy Rosary at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church commencing at 7p.m. Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church 601 E. California Ave., on May 7, 2003 with burial following at Union Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be her sons Victor Jr. Vito, Lorenzo and Lupe Almaraz, son-in-law Henry Garza Sr., brother Andy Gonzalez and special friend Dr. Calving Kubo. Honorary pallbearers will be her 61 grand and great-grandchildren.

A special thank you to the wonderful staff of Memorial Hospitals critical care unit. For 33 days, they cared for Mom with compassion and dignity and it was clear this caring came from their hearts. We also wish to thank Dr. Laughlin who helped Mom put up a good battle and who was able to experience the great fighting spirit of this special lady. And lastly, we wish to thank Dr. Kubo who was a daily visitor to both Mom and Dad and who has given our family comfort during these two difficult moths.
