Second Lieutenant Phillips was the co-pilot
of U.S. Army Air Corps B-24D Liberator
#42-72862, serving with the 421st Base Unit
from Muroc Army Airfield (now Edwards Air
Force Base), California.

During a gunnery and formation training
flight at 20,000 feet over Death Valley, his
bomber collided with B-24J #42-78522, which was piloted by
2nd Lt. Ernest Jack Chapman and
both aircraft fell to earth, crashing west of
Furnace Creek, killing seventeen airmen.
There was only one survivor.
