U.S. Congressman. He studied law in Hudson, New York, was admitted to the bar in 1831 and established a legal practice in Elyria, Ohio. He was prosecuting attorney of Lorain County, (1833-35) and elected as a Whig to the Twenty-eighth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Henry R. Brinkerhoff, serving (1844-45). Not a candidate for re-nomination, he engaged in the newspaper business, established the True Democrat, in 1846, was a member of the Free-Soil Convention in 1848 and president of the board of public works, Cleveland, Ohio, (1849-52). He also was attorney for the Cincinnati Indianapolis & Lafayette Railroad for many years. In 1884, he moved to Williamsburg, Virginia, to supervise his extensive land holdings at the Newport News and later died at age 86 in Washington, D.C.
