Bob was born in Lyons, Rice Co., Kansas, the middle child of five boys. He worked as teenager in 1940, during the depression, in the C.C.C. (Civilian Conservation Corps) He enlisted in the U.S. Army, "Big Red One", in about 1942. He was wounded twice and awarded 2 Purple Hearts and 5 Battle Ribbons. He drove a "Duck" in the 1st wave on to the beach at the Normandy Invasion. A machine gun sargeant who fought in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, Normany Beach, and the hedge rows of France and Germany. Drove a "Duece-and-a-half" on the Red Ball Express at the Battle of the Bulge. Married Betty Jean Weigel in November 01, 1946 at the First Christian Church, Newton, Harvey Co., Kansas. They tried to marry on Holloween, but no minister would marry them. Bob was a district manager and store manager for 35 years with Montgomery Ward's. He retired, in 1981, with his wife, Betty, in Great Bend, Barton Co., Kansas.
