Marvin Schafer, the son of Louis and Esther Zinnel Schafer was born March 15, 1939 in West Bend where he was raised and received his education. He was baptized and confirmed at Peace Lutheran Church in West Bend, and graduated from the West Bend High School in 1957. He served in the United States National Guard from 1957-1961. He married Claudia Ruark May 20, 1962 and the couple later divorced. On March 15, 1986 Marvin was united in marriage to Cynthia (Reamsnyder) in Algona. The couple lived in Algona until they moved to Badger in 1991. They eventually moved to Grimes in 2002.
Marvin worked for the DOT in both Humboldt and Kossuth counties, owned and operated Schafer Enterprises in Algona, worked at Rohlin Asphalt Company in Estherville and Black Top Services in Humboldt.
Survivors include his wife Cynthia, Grimes, IA, daughters, Lynn (David) Fredrickson, Onawa, IA, Lori (Christopher) Lee, Yuma AZ, Jacquelyn Pilling, Badger, IA, and Rebecca (Jeremy) Chicoine of Sioux City, IA, a son Brent (Tara) Schafer of Lincoln Nebraska; 14 grandchildren, brother Charles (Joan) Schafer of Heber Springs, Ark, and sisters Shirley (Robert) Schmidt of Chariton, IA and Tami (Mike) Beaty of Brooklyn Park, Minnesota.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and a granddaughter Kara Pilling.
