Presidential Cabinet Secretary. Working as a social worker in New York City, New York in the 1920s, due to the economic depression stemming from the stock market crash in 1929, he was appointed chairman of the New York State Temporary Emergency Relief Administration, in 1931. When Franklin Roosevelt was elected United States President in 1931, he put Hopkins in post as administrator of the Federal Emergency Relief Administration. Serving as a personal friend and as an adviser to President Roosevelt, he was appointed the 8th Secretary of Commerce in 1938, serving until 1940. During World War II, Hopkins made several trips for President Roosevelt to London, England and Moscow, Soviet Union to discuss assistance and military strategy. His final service was to Moscow to help arrange the Potsdam Conference for President Harry S. Truman in 1945.
