Bezaleel Wells was the son of Alexander Wells and Leah Owings Wells. Husband of Rebecca Resteau. He studied engineering and graduated from William and Mary College.

Bezaleel Wells was known as one of the best surveyors in the country. Bezaleel Wells, along with James Ross, founded Steubenville, Ohio, on the ruins of Fort Steuben in 1797. In 1804, Wells also helped found Canton, Ohio. In 1815 Bezaleel helped establish a woolen mill in Steubenville. Wells also opened the first bank in Steubenville, Ohio.
His home "The Grove" was the center of social life in the area with Henry Clay and William Henry Harrison visiting the mansion.(Abstracted information was taken from a presentation done at the Steubenville Public Library)

According to the Canton Repository's web site under their Lifestyle, Bezaleel Wells was born on April 4, 1768, (Found information on 6/23/2021). Unfortunately, the picture of Bezaleel's stone is too hard to read; the birth year is inscribed either 1768 or 1769.
