On July 12, 1920 Mr. Grover Cleveland Burson, Jr., was born on Center Street in Carrollton, Georgia.

He was educated in the Carroll County School system, played basketball and football for Bowdon High School and graduated in 1938. He soon joined the U.S. Navy and went to basic training in Norfolk, Virginia. He serve on many ships including the USS Dixie, he traveled through the Panama Canal, San Francisco and Pearl Harbor.

He graduated from two instruction schools and became a deep sea diver as well as Chief Petty Officer. He serve in Guam for 32 months during his naval career and serviced both the Pacific and Atlantic, active duty during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He received five good conducts medals, a presidential citation, European and American Theatres medals, Navy Occupation medals, Asiatic and Pacific Occupation medals. He was once known as the best joke teller in the U.S. Navy! He was the only 1st Class Petty Officer allowed to have a beard during World War II due to his fair complexion (freckles!).

After retirement from the Navy, Mr. Burson returned to Carrollton to raise his 5 year old son, Mark, whose mother, Gertrude Newman Burson had died in California. Mr. Burson met Miss Sallie Gray in January, 1959 at a church in Tennessee. His sister, Christine Eady, had introduced them and thought they would make a good match. She always said she would get him back for his childhood pranks! It was love in the air and G.C. and Sallie were married on November 26, 1959 and Sallie followed G.C. to make their home on Tyus Road in Carrollton, Georgia.

G.C. sold Life Insurance through Liberty National for several years until he had a heart attack in 1964. He sold World Book Encyclopedias for 3 years becoming the top-seller in the Northwest Georgia area. G.C. completed Real Estate classes and became a Real Estate Broker. He opened Burson Realty and helped many people in the community for 26 years.

He was very active in the Carroll County community serving in the Soup Kitchen, Central Band Booster Club, Lion's Club, Deacon at Tabernacle Baptist Church and building superintendant for many years. He was active in the YMCA of Georgia, and helped to organize the West Georgia Board of Realtors and was active in establishing the West Georgia Veteran's Memorial Park.

He later enjoyed retirement by traveling around the world with his wife, camping and fishing with family and friends and telling jokes! He enjoyed watching his grandchildren, Christy and Jesse grow up and frequently took them to Panama City, Florida.

He enjoyed watching Wheel of Fortune nightly in his easy chair, visits from friends and family and visiting him home on Lake Carroll.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Sallie Allen Gray Burson; brothers, Loyd Burson, Frank Burson, Bobby Wayne Burson and Zack Burson; sister, Christine Eady. Survivors include his son, Mark Burson and his wife, Linda Di Mare of Marietta, Ga.; grandchildren, Christy Burson and Jesse Burson; also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, February 16, 2011 at 2 PM from Tabernacle Baptist Church with Dr. J. Howard Cobble and Dr. Jimmy Gentry officiating. Music will be rendered by Mrs. Betty Sue Smith and Mrs. Carol Jackson.

Pallbearers will be Ronald Burson, Kelvin Graham, W.S. Harman, Richard Meigs, Stanley Moody and Lewis Burson. Honorary pallbearers will be Jim Harry, Robert B. (Buren) Brock, the Ted Robinson Sunday School Class, deacons of Tabernacle Baptist Church and those connected with Burson Realty.

Interment will follow in Carroll Memory Gardens with full military honors. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday from 3 PM until 7 PM.
