Frances M. (Turford) Rickards
My dear mother passed away today June 12th 2011 at 5:55 PM the age of 77.
Born in Hamilton Ontario Canada on Dec. 19th 1933 to Winnifred & John Turford she was the second child of three, Jack Turford 1930-2002 & Diane Brown 1941-2011. Mom spent the first 16 years of her life in Burlington and in the summers Bronte/Oakville Ontario, until the family decided to move to New Westminster BC in 1948. (Her father got a job working on the local Tug Boats as a ships engineer) Moms dad took the train out west to get a place to live and get things started while the rest of the family drove across Canada/USA via mostly the U.S.A. (There were no Major highways across Canada in 1948 so they took the U.S. Route) I could fill this page with the stories of that 6 week epic trip but I'll just leave it at that for now.
Mother met my Father Sapper (Pvt) Herbert S.W. Rickards a new member of the Royal Canadian Engineers in 1948 while giving out hot coffee & donuts to the Canadian soldiers helping with the flood waters in BC at that year.
They were married in 1954 just after my father's return from the Korean War of 1950-53. She had 3 children Herbert K. Rickards 1955-? (Me) Peggy M. Meyer Rickards 1956-2006 & Jason K. Rickards 1969-?
Mother worked 20 years as a Girl Guide Leader (Girl Scouts in USA) from 1955-1975 and I can remember teasing the heck out of all those (older than me at the time) young ladies so much in fact that today I do penance by buying all the Girl Guides/Scouts cookies I'm offered and being diabetic I can't eat them so my co-workers & friends get to enjoy the bounty of my penances.
After my father's death in 1970 my mother raised 3 of us on a widows pension from my father 15 years service with Canada Corrections and I can tell you that wasn't very much money to feed & clothe the three of us. A person on wefair got more money than she did at that time) But she did it with Meatloaf surprise, Kraft dinners mixed with chunks of hamburger and lots of good home cooking and to top it off her home made potato salad was what dreams were made of. (I still dream of it)
Mom's health declined after my sister Peggy's death in 2006 and with the passing of her long time companion of 37 years Bill Peter in 2007 she got worse.
Mom passed way at Surrey Memorial Hospital in Surrey BC today with her loving Son's & Grandsons & great granddaughter at her side, her last wish a few hours before her passing was a nice hot cup of Tim Horton's Coffee with two cream's (Canadian coffee house) we took photos of my brother Jason spoon feeding her the coffee and we'll be thanking Tim Horton's coffee in her newspaper obit for making her last wish come true. ^_^
The sad thing about mom is she didn't like having her photo taken so we have only a few images of her that I have to scan and post here a little later.
I could sit here all day and tell stories of her life but there isn't enough space here on Find a grave to do so. (I'll add more later as soon as my weeping heart allows me too.) Until then I'll close this for now say that one of my proudest boasts will be that Frances (Ricci) Rickards was my mother and I'm damn proud of her.

Love you forever mom............."Beep-Beep" (Personal Joke)
