Wilbur Miller Planned to Kill
Bessie (sic) Timmons,

The Delphi Herald in detailing the
Rockfield tragedy resulting in the
death of Wilbur Miller and fatal injury
to Bessie (sic) Timmons. says:
"Miller and Miss Timmons were
sweethearts and had been 'keeping
company' for about two years. Things
had not gone smoothly of late. So the
story goes, and they had indulged in
numerous quarrels. The young people seemed
to have been much attached,
however, and nearly every pleasant
evening could be seen walking
the streets of the town together.
"Last night they started for a stroll
about 7:30 pm o'clock. Miss Timmons'
sister, Miss Cassie, and Charles Smith
were also out walking being a short
distance from the other two. They
walked toward the iron bridge a short
distance northeast of town and in a
few minutes started to return. Smith
and Miss Cassie Timmons were a
short distance in front of Miller and
Miss Bertha. The couple in front
were attracted by loud talking and as
they turned saw the flash of a revolver
and heard the screams of Miss Bertha (sic).
They started to run back when
Miller said, 'you'll get some of this
gun too.' and made other threats. The
injured girl was injured in the right cheek.
She started to run home when
Miller fired the second time, and then
turned the revolver on himself. Placed
the muzzle of ihe gun close to
his forehead and fired. The second
shot fired at Miss Timmons struck
her in the right breast aud passed
through the body.
"Both were taken to their homes
and Miller expired about midnight
without having regained consciousness.
Miss Timmons is still alive, but
physicians state that recovery is impossible.
Both parties come from excellent
families: The revolver used
by Miller was a 38 caliber of the bull
dog pattern. Miller was in this city
Saturday and was drinking, and the
fatal quarrel was the result of his
sweetheart's remonstrance of his conduct.
"Later details go to show that the
affair was premeditated by Miller.
The young man has not been in good
health and is supposed to have been
suffering from lung trouble. This
fact, coupled with his love affair,
brought on melancholia and he made
several remarks yesterday which are
now plain to those to whom they were
directed. His mother asked him to
move some of his tools from the.
house, as she was cleaning the house,
He stated that his father might move
them, us he would never need them
again. In one of his pockets this
morning was found a note addressed to
this father in which, he stated that his life was miserable and he preferred to end it. He said he had some money coming to him and told his father to collect it and pay a couple of small bills that he owed.
"All day Miss Timmons was suffering
from the awful wound through
her whole body. At times she apeared to be
conscious, and several times asked as
to the condition of her lover whom
she seems to know had shot himself,
but did not know that he had died."
