Samuel Scovill was the son of William Scovill and Hannah Shailer Scovill of Haddam Connecticut. Samuel fought in the Revolutionary War as first a sergeant and then ensign in Cornelius Higgin's Connecticut Militia, fighting at the battles of Long Island and at White Plains New York.

At some time after the war he and his family migrated to Durham, Greene, New York together with many other members of the Congregational Church. He owned property in Conesville, Schoharie, New York which he willed to his son Amasa. Once there, he helped found the First Presbyterian Church of Durham, and was a leader of that Congregational Church He also helped organize the 2nd Presbyterian Church there in the early 1800s, even though it was not formally begun until 1816 after his death.

Samuel was married three times. He first married Ruth Chapman Scovill (1744-1776). He next married Mary Church Ventres.

He is buried in the West Durham Cemetery beside the remains of the 2nd Presbyterian Church on the side of the hill. The cemetery also holds the graves of many of his descendants.

This past weekend, the SAR held a ceremony marking Samuel's grave. I will update this memorial later this week with photos of the ceremony.
