Vance Brown, 86, of Mooresville, passed away on Thursday, May 14, 2009 at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center. He was born on Jan. 24, 1923 in Mooresville, to the late Oscar and Maggie Waugh Brown.

He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran serving in World War II in the Pacific Campaign. He was vice president of Barger Construction, where he worked for more than 72 years. A member of the Marine Air Group 61, Tom Swann VFW Post 1072 and the American Legion Post 66, Mr. Brown was also a member of Central United Methodist Church.

He was a pilot and enjoyed flying and loved the lake and boating. He enjoyed working in the concession stand at softball games. He loved his family especially his grandchildren and never forgot what it was like to be a kid.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Thelma Winecoff Brown; son, Eddie Wayne Brown, sisters, Helen B. Howard and Bessie B. Harwell; daughters-in-law, Elaine B. Brown and Jamie C. Brown; and stepson, Eddie L. Cline. [Grandson Quincy Lance Brown passed away in 2012].

Mr. Brown is survived by his wife whom he married on Nov. 14, 1969, Nancy Readling Brown; children, Gerald O. Brown of Mooresville, Cheryl B. Beard and husband, Donald, of Maiden, Dennis L. Brown, Deborah B. Bowers and husband, Mike, Ricky R. Brown and Carol, and Donna K. Brown all of Mooresville; stepchildren, Mike Cline and wife, Cathy, Debbie C. Gibbs and husband, Donnie, all of Mooresville, Danny Cline of Concord; brothers, Walter L. Brown, Sr. and Carl A. Brown, both of Mooresville; 15 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, six step grandchildren, and one step great-grandchild.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Monday, May 18 at Cavin-Cook Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. James Ellington officiating. Burial with full military honors followed the service at Glenwood Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Mr. Brown's grandsons, Keith Brown, David Brown, Roger Brown, Andy Bowers, Matthew Beard and Quincy Brown. Honorary pallbearers will be the employees of Barger Construction.
