Sarah Stone was born in Westford, Massachusetts on February 1,1766 and baptized the following day. Some early sources say her birth was in 1767,however with her birth and baptism records located in the vital records of Westford, Massachusetts, her actual birth date is now known.

Sarah, the youngest of ten siblings, was the daughter of,Ebenezer Stone (1720-1788) and Sarah Crowell (1718-1795).

In order of birth Sarah's nine siblings were as follows..

1) Naomi Stone b May 1,1743,d Jun 2,1805

2) Ruth Stone b Apr 30,1745,d Oct 18,1816

3) Ebenezer Stone b Aug 23,1747,d Sep 1747

4) Waldron Stone b Nov 7,1749,d Aug 15, 1798.

5) Sarah Stone b May 10,1752,d young

6) Ebenezer Stone b Jun 30,1754,d unknown

7) John Stone b Oct 19,1756,d Oct 23,1756

8) Isaiah Stone b Jul 25,1760,d Mar 22,1839

9) Allen Stone b Jul 12,1762,d 1848.

In the year 1771/72 ,when Sarah was 5 years old, her father, mother and siblings, still living at home; moved from their home in Westford, Massachusetts to a new home in Ashby, Massachusetts. On Nov 6,1771, John Fitch of Ashby, Massachusetts sold about ninety acres of land , a dwelling house, barn and other buildings, to Sarah's father,Ebenezer Stone of Westford, Massachusetts for the sum of three hundred and seventy six pounds. The large track of property, with house, was in the, then, newly incorporated town of Ashby,Massachusetts. This part of Ashby having been carved out of what was originally Townsend, Massachusetts .John Fitch, an early settler of Ashby, served as selectman of Ashby and was the town's first Moderator and Constable .John was Instrumental in the March 1767 incorporation of Ashby, Massachusetts .With the aforementioned large land purchase in 1771, Sarah's father,Ebenezer Stone ,next to ,John Fitch, had become the second largest land owner in the newly incorporated town of Ashby. One of the reasons given for the formation of a new town, was the remoteness of the people from any place of public worship. Once the construction of,Ashby's new House of Worship/ Meeting House was complete, persons of acknowledged rank and office had the first seats or pews. Twenty five pews were assigned to the twenty-five persons whose estates stood the highest on the tax list.Of said twenty-five,Sarah's father,Ebenezer Stone ,being the second largest land owner in the town, was ranked number two in said ranking.Although completed soon after the town's inception the House of Worship/ Meeting House was not fully furnished until 1771.Two years later,in connection with the construction of a new road,Ebenezer Stone's Ashby Property,Home and Orchard are mentioned in the minutes of a March 1773 Ashby town meeting. Also mentioned ,in said meeting,is the Ashby property of,Sarah's brother,Waldron Stone.

While, Sarah was still living at home in Ashby, at the age of 18 ,her father, Ebenezer sold their Ashby home with one hundred acres of land to ,Sarah's older brother,Waldron Stone. By selling the house to, Waldron, Sarah's father, likely in failing health, was making arrangements for him remaining in his Ashby home until his death. This was done by ,Ebenezer Stone spelling out, in the property deed, specific conditions for the sale. Quoting directly from the original deed of May 5,1784,Ebenezer dictates to his son ,Waldron Stone the following conditions for the sale: " Reserving to myself one of the south rooms in the house one third part of the cellar room + fourth part of the chamber room with liberty to go to and from the same and hence liberty to go to and from the well and use of the water during my natural life and always to be understood that I make this reserve that the lands nor buildings is not to be sold as long as I live without my consent".

Two years later (1786) ,Sarah Stone of Ashby married Revolutionary War patriot,Lieutenant Ebenezer Sanderson of Petersham,Massachusetts.Ebenezer was the son of ,David Sanderson and Abigail Jones.

In the early days of the Revolutionary War, Sarah's husband, Ebenezer Sanderson served,in 1775, with,Colonel Benedict Arnold's expedition to Quebec. A campaign, Ebenezer described years later as: "One of the most intensive campaigns that I engaged, the terrible march up through the Maine forest to Quebec and that engagement".

Both,Sarah's father,Ebenezer Stone and her older brother,Waldron Stone, were Patriots during the Revolutionary War. Waldron served in the Continental Army at Lexington, Cambridge and Bunker Hill. Sarah's brothers,Waldron and Allen eventually settled in Union,Maine.Sarah's other brother, Isaiah Stone joined the ministry and lived first in Dummerston,Vermont and then in New Boston,New Hampshire.Sarah's oldest sister,Naomi Stone, married, Charles Lawrence and remained in Ashby. Sarah's second oldest sister , Ruth Stone married, Maj Leonard Keep.. Leonard was a patriot during the Revolutionary War and served with the celebrated "Green Mountain Boys". Leonard and Ruth eventually settled in Franklin, Vermont.

On Oct 6,1789, Sarah's brother, Waldron Stone (the then current owner) of the former, "Ebenezer Stone" house and property, in Ashby; sold it to,William Green of Ashby for the sum of 180 pounds.Since, Waldron was bound by the aforementined condition, set by his father, that the Ashby property and house not be sold until his fathers death, it is likely, Sarah's father ,Ebenezer Stone died around 1788.This is reinforced by the fact that, Waldron and Sarah's mother, Sarah "Sally" (Crowell) Stone is recorded, in the deed, as, "Present" when, Waldron sold the house and farm to, William Green. The 1789 deed has no mention of their father, Ebenezer Stone. Additional confirmation of ,Ebenezer Stones death was the sale of ,Ebenezer's Ashby "Meeting House Pew" by Sarah's older brother, Waldron Stone on Mar 25,1791.In the deed for the pew, Waldron as the grantor forfeits what was originally his father's Ashby "House of Worship/Meeting House Pew" to,Asa Shed for the sum of 8 pounds.Waldron states in the deed for the pew : "It being the pew drawn by, Ebenezer Stone" ,confirming his father ,Ebenezer Stone was deceased at the time of the sale.(By Stating the the pew was originally drawn by, Ebenezer Stone there would be no reason ,Waldron would be selling it unless he had gained ownership of it upon his father's death)

Once ,Sarah Stone and,Ebenezer Sanderson were wed they move to Westmoreland,New Hampshire, the then residence of, Sarah Stone's older sister,Ruth Stone Keep and her husband,Maj Leonard Keep.

While living in Westmoreland,Sarah and Ebenezer Sanderson's first two children are born.Their first born was,Harriet Sanderson on Mar 30,1787.Two years later,on Jan 21,1789,came the birth of their second child,Alpheus Sanderson.

In March of 1789 while still in Westmoreland and preparing for the second leg of their northward journey, that would eventually take them to Franklin,Vermont,Sarah's husband,Ebenezer Sanderson sells most of his Petersham,Massachusetts property. On March 16,1789,he sold 140 acres plus 60 acres, to his younger brother,David Sanderson Jr for the sum of 500 pounds.

In the Spring of of 1791,Ebenezer moves his family north, taking the oxen route, from Westmoreland,New Hampshire to Chester,Vermont.Considering,Sarah was expecting their third child,Chester was likley chosen as a midway point in their jouney because,Ebenezer Sanderson's sister,Elizabeth Sanderson and her husband,Jedediah N Gould lived there.Once in Chester,Sarah gives birth to their third child, David Sanderson ,on Aug 28,1791.While Sarah and the three small children stay behind in Chester,Ebenezer,in 1791,goes ahead of the family to get a new home established in Franklin,Vermont. He was undoubtedly reassured his sister,Elizabeth(Sanderson) Gould and her husband,Jedediah Gould were there in Chester to help should the need arise.Ebenezer spends that first year in Franklin clearing land, sewing wheat and building a log house.

In March of 1792,Ebenezer moves his whole Family with him to Franklin,Vermont, and the following year his wife gives birth to their fourth child,Ebenezer "Eber" Sanderson Jr,born Jul 19,1793.Other siblings follow,Harley Sanderson born 1795,Sarah "Sally" Sanderson born 1796 married, Virgil Long . They would live in Orwell,West Haven,Ripton and then Rutland,VT.Samuel Sanderson born 1799 only lived 10 months.

Upon the organization of the town of Franklin,Vermont in 1793,Ebenezer Sanderson is elected its first town clerk a position he held until his death which occurred on April 19,1800.His death being the first adult death in the town.Ebenezer Sanderson's Revolutionary War flint-lock musket had been saved at his home in Franklin, however after his death, with the family going their separate ways,it was either lost or stolen.

After her husband,Ebenezer Sanderson's Franklin,Vermont death in 1800,Sarah married second to,Seth White.Recorded in the early records of Franklin ,Vermont is the Jan 28,1803 marriage between, Seth White and the widow, Sarah "Sally" Sanderson. After this date there are four births recorded in Franklin to,Seth and Sally White.Their names are:

1) Mary "Polly" White b July 11,1803,d Jan 22, 1898

2)Bezabel White b Nov 30,1805, d ?

3)Albert P White
b May 8,1808,d Apr 16,1891

4)Almon H. White b Jan 16,1810, d ?

Sarah's second husband ,Seth White died sometime around 1818 because in Sudbury ,Vermont on Nov 20,1820 the widow ,Mrs Sally White married third to,Israel Seeley.

Soon after their marriage,Israel Seeley and Sarah Seeley moved to Dunham,Quebec. In the Lower Canada Census of 1825,Israel Seeley and Sarah with 7 household members appear living in the Dunham township of Quebec.

Sarah and her third husband,Israel Seeley are buried in the Chapels Corner Cemetery (Protestant Side) in Dunham,Quebec.

Posted to this memorial are several original records pertaining to,Sarah and her husbands. One record is a copy of,Sarah Stone's son,David Sanderson's bible's death page where,David has written: "My mother,Sarah Sanderson or Seeley died Jan 26,1840".Since the death date in the bible record match the death date engraved on her grave stone it is affirming confirmation that this is indeed,Sarah Stone,David Sanderson's mother.Adding to the confirmation is the fact that when,David Sanderson recorded his mother's death,in his bible,he wrote: "My mother,Sarah Sanderson or Seeley",noting his mother's last name of "Seeley" at the time of her death.

Right before the 1871 death of,Sarah and Ebenezer's first born,Harriet Sanderson Tenney,an author,Sarah E Felton took an account from,Harriet about her chidhood and the stuggles the family had on the frontier of northern Vermont in the 1790's.The account she gave, published 1871,in "The Vermont Historical Gazetteer" vol II serves as one of the important sources for our knowledge of, Ebenezer and Sarah's life on the frontier,in the northern Vermont wilderness. In the account,Harriet recalls that in the spring of 1791 the snow was so deep that they were forced to remove all but their most necessary articles of house keeping into town, upon a hand sled, from Missisquoi Bay,Canada East,a distance of ten miles. She also describes how their first home in the wilderness was constructed of trees of the forest, roofed with bark, with floor of rifted logs,no saw mills being at hand in those days, and a chimney built of sticks and clay, the back being formed of a large rock,of which the house was built.A blanket served in place of a door, and she well remembers sitting upon the end of the floor to warm her feet at the fire. The house was a fair specimen of a Vermont frontier residence. The original home has long since fallen to decay;the large rock alone remaining to mark the spot where the home once stood.

Filling in some of the gaps in,Harriet's account of,Ebenezer and Sarah Sanderson's early years is a hand written family history told by, Ebenezer's grandson,William Harley Sanderson to his daughter,Frances Elizabeth Sanderson. The said hand written genealogy along with, David Sanderson's family bible are currently in the possession of,Sarah's and Ebenezer Sanderson's 4th great grandson,John Clay Harris, author of this biograpy.
