U.S. Congressman. He was attending college when he joined the Union Army and served as a First Lieutenant in the 3rd Regiment, West Virginia Volunteer Infantry, during the Civil War. After the war, he taught school, studied law, was admitted to the bar and proceeded to practice law in Kansas, in 1871. He was probate judge of Linn County (1872-76), County Attorney, (1876-80) and a member of the Kansas State Senate, (1880-88). In 1895, he was elected as a Republican to the Fifty-fourth Congress, serving until 1897. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed the practice of law in Oklahoma, until his death at age 65.
