Clara Roberts (68964541)

Clara Estelle Goodwin Roberts was the eighth child and fifth daughter born to Jacie and Belle Goodwin. She was born April 24, 1919, at the family home near Manitou, Oklahoma.

At the age of 18, Estelle married Virgil Lee Roberts on Christmas Day, 1937, at the Manitou Baptist Church parsonage. Virgil Roberts was born August 12, 1915 at Manitou.

After their marriage, the couple moved to Littlefield, Texas where Virgil worked in the oil fields. Both of their children, Jerry Mack Roberts, born September 30, 1939, and Mary Lois Roberts, born July 11, 1943, grew up in Texas.

The family later moved to Pierre, South Dakota where Virgil had a job with the construction company that was building the Oahe Dam near Pierre. Their son, Jerry, who had just graduated from high school had a job with a company that built roads to the dam. On July 26, 1957, at the age of 17 years, Jerry died of injuries he suffered after being run over by a gravel truck while working on an access road to the Oahe dam

Estelle worked for the J.C. Penny Company for several years before retiring. She, however, did not retire from her church and civic work. She continued supporting the Pioneer First Southern Baptist Church of Pierre finically and with cooking for church suppers and other functions. In April 1994, the city of Pierre honored Estelle on her 75th birthday with a huge birthday party, which was given in appreciation for her civic contributions to the community.

Estelle's husband Virgil Roberts died June 10, 1987, at the age of 71. She was a widow for sixteen years prior to her death February 25, 2003. After her funeral service, she was buried next to her husband at the Riverside Cemetery, Pierre, South Dakota.
