Pierre Youth Dies After Accident On Highway Project

Jerry Roberts, 17-year-old Son of Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Roberts. 1117 E. Park St. and a 1957 graduate of Pierre High School, died of injuries suffered this morning in an accident at a construction site.
Hughes County Sheriff Ralph Kreitman, investigated said Roberts was working for Alexander Construction Co. on the new access road to the Oahe dam on the east side of the river.
Roberts was spotting gravel trucks and pulling the dump lever on the trucks at a gravel stockpile about three quarters of a mile from the Western Contracting Corp. offices.
Apparently, young Roberts slipped on the gravel and fell under the rear wheel of a truck as it was pulling away after dumping its load, Kreitman said. The wheel passed over Roberts' midsection, the sheriff reported.
The accident happened, about 9:30. Roberts was admitted to St. Mary's Hospital at 9:50 and died a few minutes later.
Kreitman identified the driver of the truck as Reinhold R. Jakober, 52, of Aberdeen.
John Sibert Jr., Oahe area engineer for the Corps of Engineers, said an investigating board had been named to inquire into the cause of the accident.
Active in extra-curricular activities in high school, Roberts was guard on the Governors' football squad during his junior and senior years. He was also "mayor" of the high school during the second semester of last year. Also in his senior year be was a junior Kiwanian and a member of the choir.
Surviving besides his parents is a younger sister.
