Amos worked for Mr Hunter, government clerk and was taking correspondence west when caught at Eagle Pass by Duff's raiders and hung for refusing to join their Conferate Band. His family from Illinois all belonged to the Union Army and some had been killed, so his loyalties could not belong with the Confederates, especially the renegades that roamed this part of the country at that time. His wife, Lucretia was pregnant with their last child, Amy.
