Dorothy Cromley Jenkins died at her home on March 31, 2008, after an illness of several months. Born June 15, 1919, in Brooklet, Dorothy was the daughter of William Chapman and Myrtle Robertson Cromley. She graduated from Brooklet High School and South Georgia Teachers College. She received one of the first Master of Education degrees offered at Georgia Southern College and did further post-graduate studies at Duke University, George Washington University, University of Georgia and in England.
Dorothy is survived by her two daughters and their husbands, Anne and Billy Clifton of Statesboro and Jenny and Mike Zagariello of Berkeley Heights, N.J.; three grandchildren, Lori (Steve) Conway of Atlanta, Brant (Angie) Clifton of Statesboro and Abigail Zagariello of Boone, N.C.; as well as three great-grandchildren, Zach and Anna Clifton and Cecilia Conway also survive. She is survived by her sister, Mary Cromley Jeffords of Sylvester, Ga.; and a number of beloved cousins, nieces, nephews and their families.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest J. Jenkins; her son, John Joseph Jenkins; and her brother, William C. Cromley Jr.
Dorothy spent her entire career as a teacher and principal. After teaching a number of years in both independent and public schools, she became lower school principal of Savannah Country Day School in 1959, a position she held until her retirement in 1987. She was highly honored during her tenure as principal by having a building at the school named Dorothy Jenkins Hall.
Dorothy lived in the historic district of downtown Savannah for over 30 years. She was presented an award in 2005 by Historic Savannah Foundation for her efforts to maintain her downtown home and garden as well as her support of historic preservation in Savannah. She was a member of Wesley Monumental United Methodist Church, the Fellowship Sunday School Class, the Downtown Garden Club and the Humane Society. She was known for her daily walks around the downtown area and for tending her garden to the enjoyment of tourists and locals.
She enjoyed her long association with her faculty and staff of Savannah Country Day School, her neighbors and friends, and most of all, her loving and devoted family. She will be fondly remembered by her former students who were fortunate enough to come under her instruction, supervision and guidance.
The graveside service and burial will be held in the Brooklet City Cemetery on Thursday, April 3, 2008, at 11 a.m. The family will receive friends following the service.
The memorial service will be Thursday, April 3, 2008, at 4 p.m. at Wesley Monumental United Methodist Church, 429 Abercorn Street, Savannah, Georgia 31401.
