Here he wooed and won a wife, Brechtje Lina Barger with whom he was married on September 4, 1870. For 52 years these two lived together here in Ackley, sharing many joys and sorrows with one another. Twelve children came to gladden the home but to the great sorrow of the parents, they were called to stand before four open graves which were about to enclose about the forms of beloved children.
Yet thru all these sorrows Mr. Stoehr remained cheerful, kind, and buoyant in his faith. Great was his attachment for his wife and children and many times these children would gather together in a family gathering but always he was the life of the party. At the last of these gatherings on Christmas Day he seemed to feel that it would be the last. Two days after Christmas on Wednesday, he took suddenly sick and grew rapidly worse. Never-the-less, it came as a shock to the family and friends when they realized that he must soon pass out of this life. But not only did they realize this, he himself felt that he would not recover and so prepared himself to stand before His Maker.
He died in the victorious faith in Christ's atonement on Saturday morning, December 30, 1922, about 12:30 aged 72 years, 3 months, and 25 days. He leaves to mourn his death his devoted wife and 8 children. Maggie (Mrs. Wm. Becker), Herman, Hannah (Mrs. Wm. Sauter), Bernard of Waterloo, John of Independence, Bertha (Mrs. Fred Hintzen) of Mason City, Mayme (Mrs. Wm. Pohlman) and Taldine (Mrs. Fred Thies). There are also three of his brothers still among the living and 18 grandchildren.
Mr. Stoehr had identified himself with the community in which he lived. For a long number of years he was a dependent operator of the Ackley mills. He was active in his church and Sunday school for many years. He will be missed not only by his family but also by his neighbors and friends, by the whole community. - Ackley World Journal
