Juan José Carrillo y Ortega was born at Santa Bárbara, Alta California, México, and baptized at the Presidio Chapel November 21, 1838 (BP Baptism 01293). He was the son of José Gertrudis Carmelo Carrillo y Castro (1810-1871) and María Catalina Manuela Ortega y López (1810-1852). His parents were married at the Santa Bárbara Presidio Chapel November 8, 1829 (BP Marriage 00156). He became a U.S. citizen with the transfer of California's sovereignty in 1848. During the Civil War he enlisted as a private for 3 years and was mustered into Company C, 1st Battalion, Native California Cavalry, alongside his father at Santa Bárbara July 25, 1864. He was appointed sergeant May 11, 1865. Sergeant Carrillo was posted to Fort Mason, Arizona Territory, from September 1865 to January 1866. He returned to California and was mustered out with his company at the Presidio of San Francisco April 2, 1866. After the war he married María Filomena Delfina Valenzuela y Sepúlveda at Santa Bárbara May 27, 1868. Juan filed for a Civil War veteran's pension at Santa Bárbara August 28, 1890, and received certificate No. 797,242. After his death, María Filomena filed for a Civil War widow's pension and received certificate No. 526539.
