Composer. Dr. Sumerlin was a world-renowned composer and music teacher, and one of the earliest composers and teachers of electronic music. His musical compositions have been performed by orchestras, bands and choirs throughout the United States and Europe, and he was a member of the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP). He has written over 500 compositions
including chorus works, instrumental solos, orchestral works, band, synthesizer and tape compositions, operas, and cantatas. He began composing music in 1940 and continued until his death. He was the oldest child of Arthur Dee Sumerlin & Essie Mae Weems. He graduated from Roby High School in Fisher County, Texas, and attended college at Hardin-Simmons University, and the University of Texas at Austin. He pursued his doctorate in Music Composition at Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York. He joined the USAAF in WWII and served as an Air Force instructor. He was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Sealy, and he was a 32nd degree Mason. He was awarded an honorary Doctor of Music degree from The Texas Guild of Composers. He was an extraordinary teacher with a gift of being able to convey the complexities of music as a craft and art form in a manner both logical and understandable. He had an inventive and inquisitive mind with a continued desire to learn. Dr. Sumerlin died at his home in Sealy, Texas at age 85. [Bio by Michael]
