U.S. Congressman. Educated at Aaronsburg Academy, he taught school and studied law at Lock Haven, Pennsylvania. During the Civil War, he joined the Union Army and served on special duty at the War Department until transferred to Florida, in 1865. There after the war, he was admitted to the bar in 1868 and commenced to practice law in Tallahassee, Florida. He was a member of the Florida State constitutional convention in 1868, served in the Florida State Senate (1869 to 1872) and was appointed Florida Secretary of State, but declined. He served as a Brigadier General of the 1st Brigade, Florida Militia, but resigned that post in Aug 1870. As chairman of the Florida Commission, he was an assessor of US Internal Revenue for the District of Florida, (1870 to 1872). In 1873, he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-third Congress and Forty-fourth Congress, serving until 1877. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he engaged in agricultural pursuits until he moved to Washington, D.C. and lived in retirement until his death at age 88.
