On the 11th day of Jan. 1798 a baby girl was born in Clinton County. New York. Her parents, Samuel Allen and Sarah Jane Powers gave her the name of Margaret Belinda Allen. Her father, Samuel Allen, was born 15 April 1773 at Manchester, Vermont, the son of Jonathan Allen and Margaret Hufcut. Jonathan Allen enlisted in the American Revolution at Manchester, Vermont. After the war clouds cleared away, he, like many other veterans moved West. Jonathan finally settled in Madrid, St. Lawrence County, New York. Here his son Samuel Allen and wife Sarah Jane Powers joined them. Where and how Silas Wilcox and Margaret Belinda Allen met is not known, Madrid, however, is but a few miles from Norfolk. Silas and Margaret were married in Madrid on 17 January 1818.
They had two sons, Samuel Allen and Silas Almeran born in Norfolk, St. Lawrence, New York; a son, David Alfred, and a daughter, Phoebe Ann, born in Mountain, Dundas, Ontario, Canada. After they join The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, they moved to Nauvoo, Hancock, Illinois, where their son, William Christopher Wilcox was born in January 1941. Margaret Belinda suffered with ill health and during the expulsion of the Mormons during the harsh winter of 1846 it was worse.
Silas was sent with his sons Silas A. and David to gather lumber for the Nauvoo Temple and other construction projects. His son Christopher told his children that when his father returned home with the lumber and his pay, Jesse Pierce Harmon met him and insisted he was going to marry Margaret. After some harsh words, Silas slammed the money on the table and left again. Jesse and Margaret were married 8 February 1846. Margaret recieved her Endowment the same day in the Historic Nauvoo Temple.
She died by 3 December 1848 (date of her burial) in the Big Spring Branch in what was then Pottawattamie County, Iowa.
As the image shows, her name appears on the memorial at Nauvoo Cemetery, also know as the Old Nauvoo Burial Grounds. However, she died in the Big Spring community and was buried somewhere around Winter Quarters. A family researcher said she found her on the list of unmarked graves # 62.
