WILLIAM BEST RITES ARE CONDUCTED HERE WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON
The funeral of William Best, Negro veteran of the Spanish-American war, was held Wednesday afternoon from Smith's chapel. The Rev. H. R. Best, pastor of the First Baptist church, officiated.
At the grave a firing squad from Yellowstone post, American Legion, paid military respects while a bugler sounded "taps". A quartet composed of Mrs. H. Smith, Mrs. T. B. Williams, Mrs. G. D. Choice and Mrs. H. W. Bivens sang "Nearer, My God, To Thee," and "Rock of Ages."
Pallbearers, all members of the Bruce Wallace camp, Spanish-American War Veterans, were Charles Bell, Dave Kenoly, C. G. Thomas, John G. White, Timothy Cox and D. J. Brumbaugh.
Mr. Best served with the Tenth United States Cavalry regiment in Cuba and the Philippines. He had lived in Billings for 14 years and is survived by his widow, eight children and two grandchildren.
