Per Jeffry Burden;

William, a grocer by trade, was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in Company "C",
1st Virginia Infantry on 21 April 1861. He was wounded in the ankle at the
Battle of Blackburn's Ford on 18 July 1861. Promoted Captain on 19 November
1861, he resigned on 26 April 1862. He was commissioned Captain in Company "B",
2nd Virginia Reserves on 6 March 1864, and served to the end of the War. He took
the Loyalty Oath in Richmond on 25 April 1865, and thereafter worked as a
merchant there.
